So much for the new year!

How did you people celebrate the 31st?
My friends and I were out driving to town with no plans whatsoever!
We reached Nariman Point and witnessed a display of fireworks.

There was this Parsi couple out there, quite old, but enjoying themselves!
With every rocket that went up in the sky, they were excitedly clapping.
Parsi aunty was shouting away, "Aai jo, aai jo...pelu to ekdum dil par aave chhe!
"She even asked this guy who was standing at the Marine Drive pavement to bend down as she could not see one rocket properly! Such innocent pleasure she was having!

There were kids, rowdies, office going people, lovers, youngsters, hawkers, you name it!
I have never seen Bombay like this. Wherever we went, the place was bustling withaction; from scantily clad girls to guys dressed in the 70's style; guys supporting girls who were completely sozzled and about to fall...I saw them all and was amazed as to how our culture has changed so drastically! Dressed in our jeans and full sleeve t-shirts to keep uswarm, we seemed to be the most dressed amongst them all!

We even saw this small group of slum dwellers dancing away to loud music and eunuchs dressed to kill. It seemed that the whole world - the rich and the poor were rejoicing on the last day of the year.

We returned home safely, saved from all the drunk drivers that wereall over the city.

In the morning today, everything was as usual...Mumbai was the same with everyone running to work. I got into the train with my friend Padmini. As she didn't have a pass, I was accompanying her in the second class.

The working ladies were all talking about the same thing in the compartment - how they celebrated the New Year's eve. Two poor women labourers were sitting on the footboard and talking in an unknown language.

Jogeshwari went past and Goregaon was approaching. We were preparing to get off when one of the women asked us a question, "Baby, aaj taareekh kya hai?"

So much for the most happening day in the world!
